State Housing Company Limited (SHC) was established originally as the Gold Coast housing corporation in 1956 under the Gold Coast Housing Corporation Ordinance 1955 (No.31).
In 1965, the name of the Corporation was changed to the State Housing Corporation (SHC) and mandated to “increase the availability of dwelling houses in Ghana.”
Its philosophy was to provide housing as a social service. In July 1995, SHC was converted into a Limited Liability Company under the statutory Corporations (Conversion of Companies) Act, 1993.
It was duly registered under the Companies Code 1963 on July 10, 1995 and structured to operate as a commercial enterprise. SHC’s housing units are priced to be more affordable than those offered by private developers. Flexible payment plans, including mortgages, are available to make homeownership accessible.
To apply, you can pick up a form from any SHC office or submit one online at www.statehousing.gov.gh. You will need to provide two passport-sized photographs, your Ghana Card, and pay a non-refundable processing fee of GHS 1,000. An initial deposit for the property is also required.
While SHC primarily focuses on homeownership, the government’s National Rent Assistance Scheme (NRAS) supports low and middle-income households with rent advances, complementing SHC’s efforts to improve housing access.
Any Ghanaian—home or abroad—as well as non-Ghanaians legally residing in Ghana, can buy a house from SHC. We also cater to corporate institutions and government agencies.
