The State Housing Company Limited (SHC) traces its origins to 1952, when it was established as the Ghana Housing Corporation by the Government of the Gold Coast (now Ghana) to address the acute housing shortage in the country. The Corporation’s mandate was to plan, develop, and manage housing estates across Ghana, providing affordable and quality accommodation for the growing population, particularly the emerging middle class and public sector workers.

Following Ghana’s independence in 1957, SHC expanded its operations significantly, developing large residential estates in major urban centers such as Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale. n 1993, by an Act of Parliament, the Ghana Housing Corporation was restructured and rebranded as the State Housing Company Limited, transforming it into a limited liability company under the Companies Code to operate on commercial principles while retaining its national housing development mandate.
